Self-identification helps companies ascertain how they are advancing their diversity and inclusion strategy. While self-identification is often optional, some employers are required to collect self-identification information. In fact, 75% of CXR member companies who responded to our survey are OFCCP compliant and thus require candidates to identify certain demographic characteristics. Whether optional or required, all agree that self-identification can help provide organizations with valuable insights that can impact or expand diversity and inclusion initiatives.
Collecting self-identification data varies from one organization to the next. Most of our member companies ask self-identification questions during the application process. Race/ethnicity is the most common self-identification question asked of job candidates in North America by all CXR organizations, followed closely by veteran status and disability.
